Parent Involvement

Parental involvement is something we value at Oxenhope C.E. Primary School. We understand the vital importance and pivotal role that parents play in helping children learn and succeed. We therefore firmly believe that education should be an ongoing partnership between home and school.

In Reception and Key Stage 1, there is day-to-day contact between teachers and parents at the beginning and end of the school day. Key Stage 2 children have a Homework Diary which parents and teachers can use to keep each other informed of progress or items the teacher needs to be aware of.

We hold parent consultation evenings where you are able to discuss your child’s progress with their class teacher. In the summer term, you will receive a written report highlighting your child’s progress and areas they need to work on to best make the next steps in their learning.

HOME READING

We run a home reading scheme which enables all children to take home reading books on a daily basis. We cannot emphasise too strongly the part parents can play in reading development at all levels. What you do really does make a difference!

Book bags are available from the office.

LEARN BY HEART

All children have a “learn by heart” book they bring home in which they record the maths targets they are working on. Parents play a vital role in assisting their children to lean these basic mental maths skills.

OPEN AFTERNOON

In early November each year, parents are invited to attend our Open Afternoon, where our Headteacher and Deputy Headteacher will show you round our school and answer any questions you may have.

In addition, you are welcome to make an appointment to see the class teacher or Headteacher at a mutually convenient time in any circumstances where at any time you have concerns or queries.

There are other ways that parents can be involved with school and we welcome and benefit from regular voluntary support from parents.  Listening to readers, assisting with art and craft activities, baking and assisting on educational visits are some examples of the way parents get involved and support the work we do in school. Parents also get involved with support the sporting activities the school takes part in and assist in running school clubs.

FRIENDS OF OXENHOPE SCHOOL

Please see the Friends’ Page for more information.

BREAKFAST WITH GOD

Parents and volunteers from our community run the Friday morning “Breakfast with God” before school club where children share breakfast, take part in creative activities and participate in praise songs, bible stories and prayer. The club is open to all age ranges in school and is extremely popular with currently 33 children on the roll!  If you would like further information please contact the office.

HOMEWORK

We see homework as:

extending school learning.

supporting learning through practise and re-enforcement.

integrating with the regular programme of school life.

encouraging self-discipline and confidence for lifelong learning.

In Key Stage 1 and Reception, the main purpose is to have children and parents working together on short activity sessions.

In Key Stage 2, the purpose is to move towards independent learning but still with parental involvement.

The pattern of time allocation varies across the Key Stages and can be found in our homework policy, a copy of which is available on request.
